Why does a site have value?

A site has value if the buyer sees value in it. As obvious as that sounds, there are thousands of sellers who put their sites up for sale each year completely oblivious to the truth and in the mistaken belief that if they see value in their own site - perhaps because the niche is a particular hobby of theirs - then buyers would see value in that site too.

That the seller has amassed huge amounts of useful information in a particular subject is, of itself, of no value to the buyer - he can access all that information without paying a dime. He needs to be given a reason to "own" that information.

Buyers see sites as mini-businesses or as business assets. They expect a return from the site they are spending money to buy. The return is often in the form of direct earnings but a purchased site can provide other indirect benefits, all measurable in dollars. It could channel traffic to the buyer's main site. It could provide links/SEO benefit to another site. If it's the only competitor to the buyer, it could simply be closed down to leave him with a monopoly and the ability to ramp prices up on his own site. Whatever the benefit, the buyer is likely measuring it with the same yardstick that he's using to pay for the site: money.

So, yes, the primary motivation for buyers is profit. Not profit that the site has made in the past, not profit that the site is making now, but profit that the site is going to generate for them in the near future in one way or another. That logic underscores the biggest of purchases, from the youtubes and myspaces to top domain names, even if those properties aren't earning a penny (yet).

Since it is the anticipated future profits that determine what most buyers are willing to pay, it then boils down to a method of measuring those expected profits. This is where it gets tricky. How do you measure something that doesn't exist?

Indicators of future profit

In the case of well established sites, it is invariably the practice of buyers to examine cash flow and earnings. They want to see the profit the site has been making in the past, how steady those profits have been ... and for how long.

They are aware that, like with stock market investments, site profits can go up and down. However, a site making strong profits on a regular basis is more likely to continue making those profits than a brand new site with no history.

But buyers may see other opportunities that the seller has missed. They may see a badly monetised site and realise they can do a better job. It is not, though, in their interest to disclose this to the seller ... and they don't. The seller can't therefore expect to push the selling price up based on the "potential" a buyer sees. The only circumstances where that happens is when multiple buyers recognise the potential and bid against each other.

It's often the case that the seller recognises "potential" in the site (or believes he does), but this "potential" has an absolutely zero impact on the selling price. It's only the buyers' opinions on potential that can feed through to a higher selling price.

Value based on assets + value based on earnings

Sellers fallaciously argue that in addition to the earnings value of a site, there should be a value attached to their traffic/ SE rankings / valuable content or other asset. Unfortunately, for most sites, there is no further value to these assets. This is covered in the site valuation myths.

Under-monetised sites: where earnings don't reflect true worth

What about buyers who are buying sites - say non-profitable sites - for their domain name, Page Rank, traffic, back links, Alexa rank, age, copyrighted content, brand or other "asset"? How do they value these assets when there are no earnings directly attributable to each asset to provide a guide?

First, and to repeat a point made earlier, the seller's estimated value for these assets doesn't affect the selling price. If the buyers see value in these assets they would choose to not include that value in their offer unless they thought their competition would attach such a value and beat them to the purchase.

And that's an interesting point. The value built into the final selling price that is directly attributable to these assets is the value that the highest bidder was willing to pay for those assets.

How do you as a buyer/seller estimate what the highest bidder would be willing to pay? The winning bidder takes his highest bid to that point where it is just sufficient to see off his competition. If we know what the competition is regularly bidding for a a particular type of web asset - and have access to that information for hundreds/thousands of such recent transactions - it's relatively easy to make a fairly accurate prediction.

Our sister site's valuation tool attempts to do just that. It's backed by extensive data from real sales in the market carefully analysed by experts. It focuses more on valuing whole sites than individual site assets but take that website valuation tool for a spin today. It won't value your site in the hundreds of millions like some other so called valuation sites do, but it should give you a more accurate market value than any other service currently available.

10 Ways to Ruin Credibility and Lose Trust

I’ve always liked top 10 lists and i know many others do as well… not the ones solely created for link bait though! But if done with good intentions, like the list below, they can be very valuable!

Today I noticed a few good examples of people who will never be successful online until they realize that what they’re doing is not helping anyone. I’ve added them as well as several others I’ve seen over the years… here they are:

1. Act like someone you’re not! This is something many people do without realizing it. Don’t get on social sites etc. acting like you’re some big successful business man if you’re not! Just be a nice, helpful person and HELP PEOPLE! That’s what’s important! I guess many people speak and act like the person/people they want to eventually be like. BE YOURSELF! There are many people more successful than I am, but I’m Josh Spaulding damnit… they can never be me and I can never be them… I am perfectly fine with that and you should be too! Be yourself because fake people are easy to detect!

2. Promote a product, whether it’s your own or someone elses, that promises to increase blog comments (for example) when the blog you’re using to promote it has a total of 5 or 10 comments. That’s one example, but you get the point. Today I followed some guy on Twitter and he had an auto DM sent out to new followers promoting a Twitter Ebook about getting “Thousands” of twitter followers. This guy had 300 followers… come on guy, you might as well say “I have no credibility, why are you even following me?”

3. Make a claim with absolutely no proof or means of backing it up! This happens ALL the TIME! Just login to any of the more popular Internet Marketing Forums (excluding my Internet Marketing Forum) and you’ll see thousands and thousands of “THIS is how you do it” with absolutely no proof, other than “My guru said so!” Give me a break… be your own guru and find out for yourself by DOING it and you’ll start making money and building trust!

4. Create a website with no Contact, About or Privacy pages. This is one many people just forget about. I’m guilty of it from time to time as well, but it’s important. I believe search engines look at this, although that’s just an educated guess and many people, especially on an e-commerce site look for little things like that when deciding whether or not to make a purchase or enter personal details.

5. Publicly “Rant” about everything that you don’t like! It’s one thing to clarify a myth or clear confusion, but to just moan and complain about people and things you don’t like just annoys most people. Be positive, people LIKE POSITIVE THINKING! I’ll admit, I’m guilty of this one from time to time as well, but I do make a conscious effort to hold back and I only rant on rare occasions these days.

6. Take refunds and/or constructive criticism personally. You simply can’t take things like that personally in this business. It doesn’t matter how good your product, blog, Website etc. is, you’re going to have people who don’t like it and some people who just legitimately don’t need the info… there’s nothing wrong with that! It doesn’t mean you’re bad or producing bad content, although that could certainly be the case as well. You’re not always right either. There will be times you KNOW you’re right and those who argue have no proof, just let them know that you would be happy to accept their logic if they can simply provide proof… then move on.

7. Promote products without actually reading/using them! Obviously this isn’t important for affiliates sites and other sites that aren’t meant to be authoritative (there are many different business models out there.) But if you’re in a niche where you’re trying to build authority and trust, you must be honest with your recommendations! If you’re recommending products people who follow you will know when you’re being honest or not! Whether you realize it or not, people can tell if you really did read/use this product or not! Be honest… there are very few products out there with NO flaws! Your reviews should reflect that.

8. Present your content in an unprofessional “ugly” way. I know many people disagree with me on this and that’s OK :) This is something I’ve realized after years of testing. Obviously this isn’t always the case, but in many cases, especially for first time visitors, a site that is professionally designed will gain you more trust and credibility than one that is not!

9. Do audio and/or video when you’re a horrible speaker. If you notice, I don’t do audio or video. The reason being, I’m a HORRIBLE speaker… I’m much better off typing ;) Video can be a very effective marketing tool, but it goes both ways! It can also ruin, or at least hurt, your credibility. Not long after I launched Article Marketing Domination I decided to split test the sales page with a video I personally did. The results were horrible! The video KILLED conversions because I should have never done it myself. If I had a talented speaker do it there’s no doubt in my mind conversions would have increased rather than decrease.

10. Fill your site full of ads. Something many people seem to believe when creating their first website is that the more ads they have the more money they’ll make. That’s simply not true and in many cases not only will you see lower conversions, you’ll see less and less visitor retention (people won’t come back.)

There you go… do you have one to add? Let me know what you see others do… things that you believe ruin credibility and cause that person to lose trust in the comment field below… there may be a X ways to build trust coming up in the near future.

What does “Viral Marketing” mean to you?

I’ll tell you what it means to me. It means having several of my articles posted on popular forums and Websites. It means “Gurus” contacting me letting me know that they are going to promote my Article Marketing Ebook to their Newsletter because they liked an article I wrote!

These things happen to me on a frequent basis and they can happen to you as well!!!!

This doesnt apply to only Article Marketing, it applies to every aspect of your Business.

Can you create an instructional video that is interesting and solves a common problem in your niche?

Can you create a Website that is so “C.O.O.L” that one person tells his or her friends and they tell their friends and so on?

You may be thinking “probably not” but I urge you to rethink that!

There was a time in my Internet Marketin Career that I thought “Viral Marketing” was something that only the “Gurus” could do. It wasn’t untill I had a couple articles that I created, that I didn’t think were really special, catch on when I started ro realize that this “Viral Marketing” thing really isn’t that hard.

Once you close your Browsers window, I challenge you to sit back and think of something that you can teach others in your niche. Think of something that you know people would be interested in reading.

DO NOT write your articles for the Search Engines. Instead, write them for your viewers! The same goes for your Website/Blog content, Videos etc.

Start creating viral products and pages and I promise you, you’re Business will soar!

Why I won’t Teach my own Sister Internet Marketing

(*edit* Just to be clear, my sister and I get along great and I have a great deal of respect for her for what she’s overcome in her life! I’m not putting down my sister in this post, I’m simply using a situation involving her as an example to teach others!)

After several years of hard times, one of my sisters got her act together, began to stay out of trouble, live a healthy life and she’s been doing it for a few years now. She’s been managing a furniture store and although the pay could be worse, it could be ALOT better too.

She asked me how she could make some money online for some extra money, so I got an article writing service going for her. She wrote a bunch of articles for a bunch of people and did well, but wasn’t really enthused about it.

After a while she got a raise at work and decided to stop writing articles for now, which I completely understood, nothing wrong with that.

However, I’ve told her several times in the past if she wanted to start a Website I’d help her do with it whatever she wants and help her make some money with it… I even registered her name domain. She never got excited about it and that domain is still empty, with it’s own account on my server.

She recently got tired of her boss and said she was ready to start doing what I’m doing online… I said, “no you’re not”

So, why won’t I help her? Simply because she doesn’t have the passion that it requires to do well online. It doesn’t take skill… it doesn’t take knowledge, that comes with time, it takes passion and determination. Those who are successful online (in business in general for that batter) are those who LOVE what they do!

People who are just happy to be building things that MAY or MAY NOT make them alot of money. People who understand that it will probably take a long time to make a good deal of money, but keep going because they just LOVE doing it!

Unfortunately MANY people who get into Internet Marketing, especially these days with the current economic conditions, aren’t getting into it because of their passion, they’re doing it because they think they can make some quick easy money and 99,999 times out of 100,000 that’s just not the case.

If my sister told me she completely understands that it may take YEARS to make good money online, although with my help it wouldn’t take that long at all ;) ) and she just wants to do it because it just seems really exciting, I’d be helping her in every way possible! But it’s not a passion of hers… it’s simply something she sees me making good money with, so she figures she can make some easy money with it too.

So, if you don’t honestly enjoy this whole Internet Marketing thing, I highly recommend you find another occupation, because it’s very likely that you will fail.

On the other hand, if you honestly enjoy doing this, stick with it and NEVER give up! It takes time, but when you truly have a passion for something, you WILL succeed… some take longer than others, but eventually you will!

Making Money Online is Not Easy

I recently read that 95% of all people fail when trying to start an online business to make money online. I have a pretty good idea why that is so. When my interest for internet marketing began, about 2 years ago, I was so excited to start making money that I couldn’t stand it.

I worked and worked for a few months just to realize that I had made a few dollars, literally. I knew the huge potential so I stuck with it. I kept doing what I knew I should do. There were several times when I realized I had been doing something totally wrong. But, it was ok because I had learned something and I then knew not to do it again.

What I am trying to say is this. It takes time and DETERMINATION to make money online. Don’t give up if you don’t see income after a few months. It may take a year for you to start seeing money come in but eventually you will start to see your hard work pay off.

Make Easy Money Online with Article Arbitrage

A few days ago I told you how I made my first money online by starting a ghostwriter service. Today I’m going to let you in on yet another technique I used in the past to make money online, but this one is even easier.
It’s called “article arbitrage” (that’s what I call it anyway) and it involves capitalizing on a whole in the market. That’s actually what the term “arbitrage” is anyway, capitalizing on a whole in a market.
How “Article Arbitrage” works and how you can use it to make easy money online In a nutshell
1. Set up a simple ghostwriting service (very simple, can be done in a few hours)
2. Find good writers who sell articles for $10 or less (the less you buy them for, the more money you’ll make). I found my writers in Internet Marketing Forums, but you can find them at Elance and RentaGhostWriter as well. If you can find Brits or Americans living in India, snatch them up. Many of them will write for VERY cheap because the cost of living there is so low.
3. Market your Ghostwriting Service in order to get customers, as I explained previously.
4. Do you see where this is going?…Joe orders 10 articles for $12/article, you order the same thing from writer#1 for $8/article. You send payment then receive payment. You pocket $40 then rinse and repeat over and over and over and over.
It works, I’ve done it! Give it a shot!
Think it’s unethical? I don’t. “Joe” needs articles. Joe gets articles. Writer needs money, writer gets money. You want some of that money, you get some of that money ;) You’re getting paid for making the connection, you just don’t tell them.

SEO Optimization Tips

No one knows exactly what the Search Engine's (SE's) look for when they show a site at the top of their results. There are, however, many optimization techniques used that have proven to provide great results.

Some of the techniques I will tell you about here are techniques that I have personally gotten great results with. SEO optimization is something that is frequently changing but if you learn at least the basics you won't go wrong.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) means you are optimizing your website in order to gain top SE placement. This means link building, placing relevant, fresh content on your pages and inserting the correct META tags etc.

I will use this website as an example when going through techniques.

Domains - Many say having your keyword in the URL of your site is very important. In my opinion it is not as important as it was in the past but it definitely would not hurt to go ahead and do so. My main keyword is 'make money online' so i have money and online in the URL.

META Tags - The most important aspect of your of on-page SEO is your META tags. These are the tags contained within your tags, which tell the SE's and users what the page is about. Below is an example of the two most important META tags; the title and description:

Title - Make sure your title is TO THE POINT. However, you also want the title to be appealing. Be sure to get your main keyword in there without adding too many "stop" words such as "the, as, only" etc. but also make sure it's appealing to the veiwer. The title is what will influence your potential veiwers in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPS.)

That brings me to another point, having different titles for each individual page. I have come across many sites that either do not have title and description tags at all or have the exact same ones for every page on their site. It is very important to establish a main keyword for each individual page and place the exact keyword in the title tag. You should not have the same title in any two pages.

Description - Use the same advice I gave for the title tag when creating the description but you can add a little more than the keyword in here. Do not make the description too long. I recommend somewhere around 6-10 words. The description should be on every page as well. The description should be different for every page and unique to that individual page.

Keyword Saturation - The number of times your keyword shows up on each page is not as impoartant as it used to be with the implementation of LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing,) but in my opinion it is still somewhat important.

The phrase "keyword saturation" refers to the number of times your keyword shows up on any given page. Each page on your site should have a different main keyword. You need to use this main keyword in the content of the page you are creating but do not get too carried away. I do not believe that there's a set percentage. I believe that the search engine algorithms are much more complex than that and the percentage of each keyword phrase is a very small part of their overall decision.

Keywords - In the old days of Internet Marketing a webmaster could obtain top SE ranking just by stuffing their keyword meta tags full of their keyword without any SEO optimization. Those days are gone along with the importance of the keyword meta tag. Many webmasters continue to use this tag like myself, just in case, but I have not noticed any kind of an effect nor have I heard others talk about one. This is what the keywords meta tag should look like:

HTML Format - The basic format of any html page should begin with then , followed by and the closing title tag and then the Meta Tags. closes the initial one and then , after this tag the main body text should be in there taking up most of the contents of the page, at the end there should be a tag and the very last thing that should be on every page is There are alot of other tags and code that can be put into the code but make sure all the mentioned tags are in the order above.
